That Costume BlogOrigin of Christmas in July

Where did the Term Christmas in July come from?
A North Carolina camp named Keystone was the first to coin the Christmas
in July phrase in July of 1933. The camp celebrated Christmas with a
tree, gifts and of course a visit by Santa. This was reported by the
National Recreation Association Journal Recreation in 1935.
In 1940 a movie with the same name was released. The movie involves a
story about a man who...

The Origin of Uncle Sam

The symbol that became synonymous with American pride, Patriotism and
the American soldier originated from a meat-packer named Samuel Wilson
in 1812. Wilson was was an inspector of beef and pork, in Troy, N. Y.
He inspected
the meat purchased for the government after the declaration of war
against England in 1812.
A contractor Elbert Anderson
purchased meat, and the barrels were marked "E.
A.," the initials of his name, and "U. S.," for United States.
Wilson's workers had their own explanation of what the initial U.S.
stood for.

Most Expensive Dress Ever Sold at Auction

Debbie Reynolds who is auctioning off her entire collection of Hollywood memorabilia had 700 of items up for sale to the highest bidder this past Saturday. The most well known piece was Marilyn Monroe's dress from "The Seven Year Itch" sold for an amazing $4.6 million. Debbie had intended to house the collection in a museum, but plans fell through in 2009 Tennessee when the creditors went bankrupt leaving Debbie to pay the bills. The winning bid easily outpaced the estimated sale price of $1 to 2 million for the dress.

Before Lady Gaga and Madonna there was the Flapper

Women came of age in the 20's. They smoked, drank, danced and voted. In
other words women finally got their "groove on" post World War I.
Without the flapper we probably wouldn't have the Lady Gaga or Madonna.
These "flappers" cut their hair, wore lots of make-up, and sometimes
went to petting parties. What is a petting party you ask? A petting
party was basically a group kissing party.

Biggest Darn Bunny You Ever Seen

What's cuter then the average bunny? How about a gigantic bunny
rabbit. In case you did not know there are two breeds of monstrous
bunny rabbits, the Flemish Giant and the British Continental Giant.
The British Continental Giant can grow unusually large, much larger then
your average 7-8 pound domesticated rabbit. In some cases up to 40
pounds which is of course larger then your average toddler. Video after the break

Was the Mad Hatter Actually Mad?

Was the delirious Mad Hatter who was featured in Lewis
Carroll's "Alice in Wonderland" actually mad? If so how did he get that
way? Well let's look back to the process of making hats in the
nineteenth century.
Lewis Carroll regularly used common songs, nursery rhymes,
expressions, and etc. as the ground work for characters in his
intriguing stories. The birth of the phrase came from the popular
thought that hatters really did lose their mind.
The various
chemicals used in the hat making process included mercurous nitrate
otherwise known as mercury. Mercury was used in the process of
manufacturing felt hats that were worn in England during Lewis' time.
Flamboyant and erratic behavior was one obvious alteration caused by
mercury among other side effects included mood swings, different
debilities, and excessive drooling. Victims developed uncontrollable and
severe twitching limbs and muscular tremors called "Hatter's Shakes".
Other common symptoms were confused speech and distorted vision.
Advanced cases revolved around psychotic symptoms and developed
hallucinations.

Real Walker Robot for Kids
Imagine your kids getting ahold of one of these for Halloween. Created

feed sweepers. Check out the video after the break, you'll also get a peek at the
larger version in the background.

3) Operation

4) Tic Tac Toe
